The game was the 6th instalment in the Mario Kart series, released in 2008. This was the first game to use the Wii Wheel peripheral that came packaged with the game. This instalment contained 32 tracks, 11 battle arenas, and 26 characters with 4 newcomers, most of who have returned later in the series. The main game modes of the Mario Kart series return, races and battles. Races retain the mechanics of the previous titles, including the focus on items and easier driving. the available options within the racing mode are Grand Prix, Time Trials, and VS race.
Battle mode contained the games Balloon Battle, which returns in each installment, and Coin Runners which was brand new. These game modes focus heavily on the player's ability to use items as they are the only way to cause your opponents to lose balloons or drop coins.
Three new items were added for this game: the mega mushroom which makes the user grow in size and allows them to squash their opponents, the thundercloud which would shrink whoever was holding it after a short time, and the POW block which would damage anyone ahead of the user.
This also had a much more expansive online mode than Mario Kart DS as this version allowed players to use all available characters and courses rather than restricting their choices to only the starting roster.
This was the game that first introduced bikes as a vehicle option which were slightly faster but with worse handling, and allowed players to do wheelies.
This is also the only game in the series to have the option of automatic drifting. This option makes it easier to take tight corners, but in return you lose the ability to gain small boosts while doing so.
